The Assessment Process

Neuropsychological evaluations help us understand, recognize and harness strengths, while also creating personalized strategies by listening to the child and family's own goals and needs.

Together we develop strategies that prioritize those goals and accommodate needs so that  your child be successful at school, home and in the community.

Initial Intake Interview/Consultation

  • The first step is to set up an intake interview. This is an opportunity for me to learn about your child, including early development, school history, social and emotional functioning, strengths, and areas for growth. We will discuss whether a neuropsychological evaluation is an appropriate next step, and if so, what questions we hope to answer through the testing process.

Review of History and Pertinent Records

  • I will review pertinent birth/developmental, medical, and educational history by reviewing records, prior evaluations, etc.

Gathering Information from Caregivers and Providers

  • I value the input of parents, educators, providers, and notably children themselves throughout the evaluation process to arrive at the most meaningful conclusions and recommendations. Parents and teachers will usually complete rating scales and answer additional questions that I may have.

Testing Session(s)

  • The evaluation itself may take anywhere from 3 to 8 hours (over one or two sessions), depending on your child’s age and needs. I will use a variety of measures to explore strengths and challenges as they relate to learning, feeling, organization, daily functioning, and connecting with others.

Feedback Session

  • A feedback session will be scheduled with parents, and in some cases directly with children and adolescents, several weeks after the assessment. During this session, my goal is for each child/teen, and family to have a clear roadmap for support, advocacy and personal growth. I hope to explain evaluation findings, collaborate to ensure that they resonate, and provide a report that reflects this conversation shortly thereafter.

Follow-Up/Consultations

  • I hope to continue to support your child/teen and family through ongoing collaboration and communication following the evaluation process. I am available for follow up consultation in relation to school supports such as reviewing IEPs and 504 plans. I may also recommend additional resources or provide advocacy to your family and child in relation to emotional and social concerns. School visits, including classroom observations, are another way I can gain insight into supports and needs.
